Why choose an outdoor wedding venue in Houston?
When choosing a venue in Houston, the options really are limitless. That can be a great thing, but also can be overwhelming. As a wedding photographer myself, I love outdoor weddings. One of the reasons behind this is because it eliminates the need for decor, which can make images look dated after the years. Trends come and go, but nature will always reign supreme for backdrops, in my professional opinion.
What do I need to consider when booking an outdoor wedding venue in Houston?
Two words; Backup plan, backup plan, backup plan! Not having a backup plan is going to be the worst plan at all. You may not need it (hopefully not!) But in the event you do, it needs to be ready to go, and everyone on the same page for the sake of planning and execution.
Weather, temperatures, bugs, wind, dappled lighting, food maintaining temperature are among some of the top issues to consider and have a plan for, with an outdoor wedding in Houston. In case you’re not local, there’s something very important to understand about Houston’s weather. It’s predictably unpredictable. Meaning, the forecast may very well say 90% chance of rain, and it may in fact rain…that does not mean your day is destined for doom though. All that means, is you may get a downpour for 10 minutes, a sprinkle here and there, or flash flooding that presents an actual risk to your guests. The good news is, Houstons weather changes fast, therefore, you don’t need to hunker down on the idea that the weather will ruin your entire days plans. It often is just a quickly passing thing.
Another consideration, are bugs. They are everywhere. From ants, to flies, to mosquitoes the size of um…you guessed it…Texas. Great ideas are to have bug misting systems at your venue, bug spray, or plan your event in the spring or fall/winter so that bugs are not the uninvited guest on your special day.
Lighting with an Outdoor Wedding
One of my main concerns with outdoor weddings (but not enough to make me dislike them) is dappled lighting. As photographers, we try to find the most flattering light for your portraits. This means, avoiding harsh light or direct sun. However, that can be hard to avoid sometimes, depending on time of day and location. A skilled photographer such as myself, will be able to shoot in any kind of light and knows how to position you so that you are showcased in a beautiful and flattering way. However, if you end up choosing a photographer with less confidence in tricky light, you may end up regretting that decision.
